Mental Alertness
What if we feel our mental alertness slipping away? Can we slow the aging effects on our brains before it gets out of hand? Is it possible to create our own mental antiaging?
Oh, what to do about brain fog?
About ten years ago, I was truly concerned because I was experiencing a sensation of brain fog regularly. It was scary!
Now I have not felt concerned about mental aging for a long while. I am sure I was able to counter mental aging in at least two ways. First, I got serious about nutritional supplements and made sure I was providing my brain with better food for thinking. Second, I engaged in more mental antiaging activities that challenged my thinking processes. Beyond that, I simply quit thinking about it. Or maybe I quit thinking about the problem because it no longer existed. Either way, I was able to stop worrying about it.
Come to think of it, maybe I should give credit for clearing my foggy brain to my daughter-in-law and my grandchildren. Over the years, as they have come into my life, I have been more engaged in enjoying life. Maybe the brain fog was really a sort of self-indulgence and loneliness. Or maybe not...
Actually, I am convinced that nutrition and various activities can combat foggy thinking and poor focus.
Mental alertness can be helped through mind challenges, mind games and puzzles. Try to find some things you enjoy which require concentration and give you a feeling of satisfaction when you accomplish them. Here are some ideas:
- Sudoku and other number puzzles
- Learning a new language
- Word puzzles, crosswords
- Jigsaw puzzles and board games
- Computer games, such as Scrabble, where you play against the computer
- Creative writing, stories or poems
- Learn some line dancing
- Quilting, crafting, or pottery
- Teaching others – It is said that we learn even more by teaching than by studying.
- Forget retirement - keep working at a job you enjoy – it will keep you young and active.
- Start your own business
When you are watching television game shows, challenge your self to call out the answers ahead of the contestants. This will help you to focus your attention and will keep you on your toes, mentally speaking.

Learn Another Language
If you have a desire to take up the learning of another language, may I present you with the idea of making it the Japanese language.
I once visited Japan and had a wonderful time. It was a shock at first, though, to realize that I couldn't read the street signs or the names on businesses. Much to my pleasure, we were accompanied by a delightful young couple. While the men were off doing business, the wife and I took in the sites and shops. Her English was great, thank goodness.
These two people were later able to move to the United States through their work, so I repaid the favor by showing her around.
